OUR STORY

The Puerto Rican Education Foundation began with Julian Acosta’s growing frustration with the social, cultural and economic turmoil in Puerto Rico.

In 2015 Julian met with Principal Lorna Perez of Toa Alta’s Nicolas Sevilla High School. It was then that he, along with his wife Nina Lopez-Corrado and his father Jose Lopez, launched the Maria Alicia Acosta Scholarship. The scholarship was named after his grandmother; an educator in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico for over 30 years. In 2015 they awarded one graduating female a $1,000.00 scholarship and one graduating male a $1,000.00 scholarship to embark on their university studies in the University of Puerto Rico system.

In the scholarship's second year they upped the ante by awarding TWO $1,000.00 scholarships and THREE $500.00 scholarships totaling $3,500.00 to deserving male and female graduating students headed into the University of Puerto Rico system. And as of the 2018 school year they have awarded 22 scholarships amounting to $14,000.00--COMPLETELY OUT OF POCKET.

By creating The Puerto Rican Education Foundation, now a non-for-profit corporation, we hope to expand our outreach and financial contributions by teaming up with you.  The Puerto Rican Education Foundation is also seeking partnerships with the University of Puerto Rico as well as varied cultural, educational and financial institutions in Puerto Rico and U.S. mainland in our effort to provide not only scholarships, but work placement, vocational education and internship opportunities to students in Puerto Rico.

OUR MISSION

The Puerto Rican Education Foundation is dedicated to providing educational opportunities to those in need.
